I Don’t Need Brunch—I Need a Friend Who Will Ride With Me to Costco

Somewhere between 25 and 45, getting together with a friend became a small destination wedding.

First, we compare calendars. Then we choose a restaurant. Then we need a reservation, an outfit, parking instructions and seventeen group-chat messages about whether 6:30 means arrive at 6:30 or begin looking for your earrings at 6:30.

Ma’am, I love you dearly, but I do not need tapas. I need you to ride with me while I return an air fryer.

That is why women are embracing the errand friend: the person who can turn groceries, returns and a suspiciously long trip through the home section into an actual good time. No centerpiece. No dress code. No pretending we did not already look at the menu online.

Brunch Has Become a Group Project

Brunch is lovely. Brunch is also a meeting that requires accessories.

Before we have taken one sip of coffee, we have selected a date, polled the group, chosen a location, studied the parking situation and discussed whether the patio will be “cute” or “windy enough to relocate your eyelashes.” By the time everybody sits down, we have essentially completed a corporate merger.

Meanwhile, the errand invitation is beautifully simple:

“I have to go to the store. Want to come?”

That is not a plan. That is freedom wearing comfortable shoes.

The Parking-Lot Conversation Is the Real Event

You ran one errand in eleven minutes. Excellent efficiency.

Then you sat in the parking lot talking for an hour and fourteen minutes because she said, “Before you go, let me tell you what happened with Jennifer.” Suddenly the engine is off, the iced coffee has melted and you are reviewing screenshots like two detectives who have absolutely not been assigned to this case.

The parking-lot conversation has everything: plot, character development, surprise witnesses and at least one sentence beginning with, “Now, I am not judging her, but…”

You are judging her a tiny bit. Lovingly. With context.

The Costco Friend Is the Highest Friendship Certification

Anybody can enjoy a nice dinner with you. The true test is whether she can accompany you through a warehouse store on a Saturday without losing her will to live.

The Costco friend understands that you came for paper towels and may leave with a rotisserie chicken, twelve muffins, a porch rug and enough cheese to provision a minor kingdom.

She will also stand beside the cart while you study an industrial-sized jar and whisper, “But would we actually use it?”

No, Brenda. Nobody has ever needed 96 ounces of artichoke hearts. Put it back before it becomes part of your estate.

Welcome to Admin Night—Please Bring Your Passwords

Another low-key friendship trend is admin night: friends gathering with laptops, snacks and all the boring tasks they have been avoiding.

One woman schedules a dentist appointment. Another cancels the subscription she has paid for since 2023. Somebody resets a password, which requires another password, a verification code and the blood of her firstborn.

It sounds responsible because it is. It also sounds ridiculous because grown women apparently need moral support to call the insurance company. We do. Please respect our journey.

Good friends do not necessarily fix your problems. Sometimes they sit across from you eating chips while you remain on hold. That is service. That is loyalty. That is practically a benefits package.

Which Kind of Friend Are You?

  • The Errand Friend: Will go anywhere as long as there is coffee and no formal footwear.
  • The “Send Me a Picture” Friend: Has prevented at least four regrettable purchases and one haircut.
  • The Voice-Note Friend: Begins with “Quick story” and delivers a limited podcast series.
  • The Emergency Friend: Can pick up a child, bring a charger or appear with tacos.
  • The Honest Dressing-Room Friend: Loves you too much to let you blame your body for a badly designed blouse.
  • The Meme Friend: May not ask how you are, but sends a raccoon video that describes your emotional condition with alarming precision.

If one woman fills all six positions, protect her at all costs. Buy her snacks. Remember her birthday. Do not make her organize the group trip.

The Best Friendship Milestone: Nobody Cleans

There is a sacred stage of friendship when someone texts, “Ignore the house,” and you genuinely do.

You walk past the laundry basket. You move the mail off the chair. You do not apologize for the mysterious collection of water cups beside the bed. She has a water-cup habitat of her own.

This is also the friend who can fold towels while you talk—or sit on the floor beside the laundry without folding a single thing. We are not measuring productivity here. We are measuring whether you can be together without performing.

Maybe Friendship Was Never Supposed to Be So Fancy

Adult life is crowded. There are jobs, children, parents, appointments, budgets and one household appliance that has been making a concerning noise for six months. Waiting until everyone is free, rested, dressed and ready for an impressive outing can mean waiting forever.

So take the ordinary moments. Ride along. Walk the store. Sit in the car. Drink coffee on the porch. Help her choose between two nearly identical throw pillows and then leave with neither.

The memory will not be the errand. It will be the ridiculous story she told in aisle seven—the one that made you laugh so hard a stranger quietly moved to another aisle.

A Note From the Women at Envy Stylz

Envy Stylz Boutique is run by women who understand women: the schedules, the family chaos, the screenshots, the parking-lot debriefs and the sacred responsibility of saying, “Girl, no,” when an outfit is not cooperating.

We love a dressed-up occasion, but we also make things for real life—the grocery run, the school pickup, the porch conversation and the friend who comes over when your house and your week are both a little sideways. Our women’s graphic tees and funny graphic tees are comfortable enough for errands and expressive enough to start a conversation. And if your errand friend helped you choose it, she has already earned first borrowing rights.

Just do not let her see the tracking email before you have prepared your explanation. As we have already established, the group chat has purchasing authority.

Now send this to the friend you would trust with a Costco run, an honest opinion and the unedited version of the story.
